It has been over a year since I’ve bought ATS Streetrally rims. They look great but it turned out to be bad decision for spirited driving. Who knew back then?
My reasoning was simple – ATS made wheels for Mini Cooper WRC so they know what they do, right?
ATS manufactures light aluminium alloy rims or wheels if you will. While tempting, it turned out to be deadly for spirited driving…light rarely means durable…I should know better after ten years of MTB downhnill.
After winter we balanced wheels and found out it is not round anymore…more like ellipse or an array of straight lines connected in shape similar to ellipse.
While alarming, my friend told me it is not that bad. Sadly, it started to be progressively worst and rims were unable to keep structural integrity anymore…just 500km later it was again unbalanced…so we balanced wheels again and just 100km later whole car was vibrating again.
Combination of rally suspension , fastest possible line often outside tarmac road, no breaking over speed-bumps and tuners’ wheels don’t make great friendship.
BEWARE OF LIGHT ALLOY RIMS – manufacturers know well why they factory rims weight about 12-14 kg for R17 alloy rims. It is almost bomb proof and designed for daily commuting of incompetent drivers who run into kerbs and so on. I never had problems on my Fabia HR II and my driving style didn’t change !
