Continental ContiWinterContact™ TS 850 (195/65 R15)

The best “universal” tire for light cars. Used on my Skoda Fabia HR II. It is compromise for everything and doesn’t work in snow despite “winter” tire. Full specification at manufacturer’s web.

PLEASE READ WARNINGS BEFORE YOU PROCEED !!!

IF YOU FIND INFORMATIONS USEFUL, PLEASE CONSIDER DONATION.

  • price about 50€
  • durability about 10,000 km on normal factory suspension
  • tire compound 10SC
  • “universal” tire for light cars such as Skoda Fabia HR II
  • dodgy snow performance

“Universal” tire for light cars

I have been using Continental with success on my Skoda Fabia HR II but Hilda HR I is different beast. Front heavy 2.0 TDi kills this tire. Back then I have been using previous generation ContiWinterContact TS780…except thread patter, not much changed.

It is hard to compare tires used on different cars. Fabia HR II was more balanced than Hilda HR I and I have also used different generation of tire. Furthermore, I didn’t have much fun in snow back then. Hilda HR I was still in factory setup and I have learnt to drive with her.

Previous model Continental ContiWinterContact TS780 used on my Fabia HR II.

Until, that dreadful day when those tires failed horribly in just 5 mm layer of wet snow on tarmac. It was simple uphill section with barely 10° angle…fresh snow on road, mixed with salt and quickly melting. I drove about 200 meters and my car stopped, driven wheels spinning and disco lights on dashboard.

Drivers behind me were happy for sure. U-turn with hand break and driving back…hopping I can keep momentum and reach highway. On normal snow it somehow works if you keep moving…if you stop, I guess you are done. This tire has got too fine thread pattern that clutters with snow very easily.
